We are celebrating five years of ministry! God has blessed us with a very productive season and we are thrilled as we look back and see how far we've come in our quest to care for children who desperately need help. To celebrate these years we put together a memory book summarizing the time. These pictures show how we prepared to, and now are caring for abadoned children, and how we've reached out to our community. Note: Since this post was written two of these kids were adopted and two were claimed by their grandmother. While we were not anticipating their quick departure, we were able to give them excellent care for the time there were with us. We treated them for parasites and malnourishment and they left us with a healthy glow .
We just wanted to let everyone know that we're temporarily on hold with bringing in the kids. Due to internal issues at the Social Services office here, we had yet another inspection yesterday (#4). We're once again waiting on paperwork to be processed. They've told us Wednesday is the day! Please pray with us that everything goes well.
We'll keep everyone posted as things happen. We just wanted to share that we are SO close to getting the first kids. In the past month we've been working with Honduran Social Services in La Ceiba, which is our regional office. The woman we're associated with here is working to help us start well. She has a heart for particular children that she will be permanently placing with us. After a couple attempts, La Ceiba Social Services came and inspected our facilities. They've given us the green light. We've met the first few children that we'll be taking in and their paperwork is being finalized so they can transfer into our care. Hopefully we'll take them home with us in a couple days. We're just waiting for the final word so we can go and pick them up!
The little kids we're starting with are so precious. We're so excited to introduce them to everyone here on the blog, but we'll wait on that until they're in our care and we have some photos to share.
During their week with us we were able to put roofs on the Volunteer House and the Furrow House. We also got a good chunk of the wiring done on the Furrow House. We also want to say thanks to those who donated to help us buy materials for the roof on the Volunteer House. This really helped us along with this big project.
As we look back at the past few years we feel so appreciative of everyone who has invested in our construction projects, either with time or finances. We wouldn't be near so far along in our work without our generous supporters! We just wanted to let you in on the secret that our grand opening is coming soon! We hope to bring in the first kids into the Give Hope 2 Kids Home by the end of June. In the past few weeks we've been meeting with lots of house parent possibilities, as well as social services. The pieces are finally starting to fall into place. Please, please pray with us that God goes before us and everything comes together exactly as it should.
If you're interested in being a part of our Sponsorship Program, please email us at: sponsorship@givehope2kids.org. We will be releasing information for our Sponsorship Program soon. You may remember that last year we built the Activity Center. One of our main reasons was to create a space for our future Children's Ministry. We've lived in Urraco for the past three years. As we've taught classes, opened the Library to the community, and simply developed friendships with people, we've seen those relationships deepen and grow in trust. One fantastic example of this, is that at our recent community movie and game night we had more than one hundred and ten people come and participate, from our village of five hundred!
During our time living and working in Honduras we've seen how much education changes lives for the better. Without education, people have few options in life and often end up trapped in poverty. There are almost no jobs where we live and if people move to the city without resources they often end up in the roughest neighborhoods with drugs and gangs. But education changes things. We know kids that are in medical school that come from families where the parents only went part way through grade school. We really believe that education means more options and opportunity for a better life.
Ronald is a student that's lived with us for close to a year-and-a-half now. As an older student (he's a 23-year-old 12th grader) he's had to fight to stay in school. When he lived with his family, they expected him to be up at 4am to help with the cattle and then he worked for us after school to pay for all his school and living expenses. Ronald was thinking of dropping out of school until we offered him a place to live. He still works after school, but now he has the time he needs to study and he's looking forward to graduating from high school this November.
We are passionate about continuing to invest in the education of young lives, to give them a future with greater possibilities. We want to say our thanks to so many of you who enable us to be a blessing to these young people.
