This past week we had a group that came from Ontario, Canada to put up a playground for us. These playgrounds are built by high school students as a memorial to a young man Jacob who sadly passed away before completing his dream of building a playground for children in Honduras. We want to say a big thanks to this group. Out of their three and a half days of building it rained for three of them, but they just kept trucking along with smiles on their faces. Everyone was wet and the mud kept getting deeper and they kept on working. Team, thanks for having such good attitudes. You were a joy to have around. Thanks for blessing our ministry with one of Jacob's Playgrounds. We also want to thanks to the Missionary Ventures crew that made this possible for us. We love you guys and enjoyed spending the time with you. The kids in our community are really excited to start playing. Lots of kids came in the afternoons to help work and just to be in on the excitement. (Some of the boys were already trying to walk across the tops of the monkey bars!) Due to the rain though, we still have to make a couple finishing touches on the playground before it's ready to go and we need to let the ground dry out after all this rain and mud. So, we're trying to grow patience in the kids for a few more days. Hold on kids!
We've begun construction on yet another building. We are putting up a home to accommodate the groups and volunteers that come to work with us. This will be one of our main construction projects for the year. We're putting up this house in the next section of our land that we're developing. It will sit amongst our gardens and fruit trees and will be a beautiful spot in years to come. So, you can all know that you have "a spot to hang your hammock," or at least a bunk to sleep in, for your future visits.
After six months of volunteering with us in Urraco, Jarod and Amanda Tippy and their two kids, Jude and Lucy, are headed back to Kansas. We just want to acknowledge them here and say thanks. This year just couldn't have gone as smoothly without them. They jumped in with all their hearts and did whatever needed to be done. Through their help we really connected with a lot more of our community this year and they kept things running smoothly during our trip to the US this fall. So, Jarod and Amanda, Jude and Lucy, we love you guys and we'll miss having you as our neighbors. Thank you for all you gave to our ministry this year. Don't forget your yellow house in the jungle and come visit again soon.
In Honduras there is a holiday called "Day of the Child." The schools all throw a big party that day for the kids with a piñata and more. This year Jason and I were involved in two celebrations for Kid's Day.
The guys from the group wired the 3rd house for kids, worked on building that septic tank, put in a beautiful stone path between the first two houses, and did some other odd jobs. The 3rd house is now really close to being done -- all we need now are doors and windows, a kitchen counter, some paint, and some furniture.
They also rented a mini-excavator for us and dug a septic tank, worked on our roads into the property, dug for our new fenceline, and leveled the land for our future playground. Needless to say, we feel that it was a huge leap ahead for us. Thanks again guys for all your hard work! We so enjoyed having you here with us and we look forward to seeing you all again soon. This is a little overdue, but I wanted to introduce the whole crew working for Give Hope 2 Kids this summer and (for some) onwards. Jared & Amanda Tippy are from Kansas and are now living in our 2nd house with their family. They have two kids: 4-year-old Jude who loves to build castles and sunny 1-year-old Lucy who just took her first step. They also brought along a family friend Dru to help out during his summer vacation. The Tippy family will be helping out the Give Hope 2 Kids ministry until December of this year. Jared is very handy and into the idea-making and engineering of projects to help us along. Amanda loves to be outside in the garden and she is helping us develop our composting and gardening system, along with teaching English classes in the local elementary school. It is so great to have these friends to work along side with. We want to say to all of you working with our ministry that we couldn't do it without you. Thank you for all that you've sacrificed to serve the kids of our area.
We want to say a big thanks to the team that came down from Grace Community Church in Northern Indiana to help us out for a week. While they were here theywere involved in a great variety of activities, including: moving fill dirt for the 3rd house, building an extension to our storage shed, designing the rafters for the 3rd house, sanding and varnishing pantry shelving for the 2nd house, hostingon a family photo day for our community, helping with English classes at Instituto el Rey, and learning how to wash clothes by hand. As you can see we kept them busy! Thanks team for all your hard work! You helped us make a lot of progress! |
