Painting

We’ve got color going on the walls of the first two houses for kids.  The 1st house is now blue on the outside and the 2nd house is mostly yellow on the inside.  We’re due for another trip to the paint store so we’re ready to slap some more color on in the next few weeks.
We couldn’t have done all this painting without help though, so we want to say a big thanks to all the friends from Minnesota and Canada that worked so hard painting.  Now our houses are looking bright and cheery, which is perfect for a Children’s Home.

With some of the same friends helping, we also painted the kindergarten/assembly hall for our local elementary school in Urraco.  Some of our Honduran workers scrubbed the white wash off the walls for two days and then we were able to come in a give it a bright coat of turquoise.  It looked really good when we had it all finished.
People down here love everything painted in a bright, bold colors.  The normal color choices for US houses would be classified as boring here.  Here you see houses painted in every color and shade.  It’s fun and cheerful and very Honduran.

Teaching English at the Local Elementary School

I wanted to show everyone some pictures of Jason teaching English to kids at the elementary school in our village.  The school has close to 100 kids in grades 1-6, taught by 3 teachers.  When we asked how we could help out the teachers said English classes would be a big help.  This is required learning in high school, but if the kids start learning it now, it will be much easier for them later.

These pictures are from the first day of school, when we told the kids in an assembly that we would be teaching English classes.  Jason had them all mesmorized and learning how to count to 10 for the first little lesson.

That was all the school the kids had though, for their first day back to school.  All the public school teachers were already on strike for the year!

Next week the kids are promised their first quiz on English numbers — they’re a little nervous.
