Happenings with the New Covenant Group

We just had the privilege of hosting a group of 21 people from New Covenant Church in Central Indiana.  It was a very fun and productive week.  We appreciated their willingness to jump in and serve.

Their construction crew joined in with our Honduran workers to help put up the Activity Center that we're building.  They built the trusses for that roof, helped pour the support beam between the columns, and rented a bobcat to move fill dirt for us.  They also screened in our 3rd house for kids.

Another neat project we worked on was providing a pair of school shoes for every kid in our local  elementary school.  This project came from the heart of a teenager from the group: he came two years ago, was inspired to go home and raise the money for the shoes, and now came back to give them out.  Wearing black dress shoes is a part of the public school uniform in Honduras, but many kids in our area cannot afford the shoes or the shoes are quickly worn out or outgrown early in the school year.

The group really enjoyed interacting with the kids from our community in English classes, at the library, and with the shoe project.  It was a joy to see the friendships that developed even with a language barrier.  I wanted to include a video that someone from the team took, showing the kids on the playground in the midst of the construction work.

Thanks to everyone from the New Covenant team!  We are grateful for what we accomplished and enjoyed the friendships that we built with you.  Come again!

We went to the school one day and measured all the little (and a few big) feet.  Then we drove to the city and went shoe shopping for 60+ pairs of shoes, which ended up being quite the experience!  We assigned shoes to each kid and went to school to see how they fit.  Amazingly we did quite well and almost every time a pair was a bit snug or a little too roomy, there was a kid sitting next to them that needed to swap.  The kids loved their shoes and we think this will help them take pride in their education.

Activity Center Progress

We wanted to show everyone the progress we've made on the Activity Center.  Right now we're getting close to finishing the structure of the building, including the columns, support beam, and footers for the floor.  In a few weeks time we have a group that will be coming to help us pour the floor and put the roof up.
We are excited to have this building finished.  Already we have so many uses for a covered area to keep lots of people dry, whether they're reading books or kicking around a soccer ball.

Building Progress

We have just returned from our annual trip to the US and we're back to business here in Honduras.  The next three months will be a busy time for us as we host construction groups and do a lot of building.
Volunteer House
While we were away our construction crew kept diligently working.  The walls are now up for our future volunteer house and we're almost ready to put on a roof and do the wiring for this building.

Our main project at the moment is constructing our activity center.  This will be a covered basketball court and will finish the community portion of our place  This community complex will include the activity center, library, and playground.  We are excited to have this building up, as it means we can greatly expand the our library facilities, host more community events, and of course, have more room for kids to play.
