A Puppy, Visitors, and Cement Work

Well, for news on us, Jason is teaching 7th grade science now.  There are finishing up a unit on circle graphs currently.  I am still helping out with art class and I have also started teaching a more advanced break-out from the 11th grade English class.  Tomorrow I will take on the 8th and 9th grade English classes, as the volunteer currently teaching them is returning for the last section of her masters degree from Bethel University, our alma mater.



Our newest acquisition is a puppy.  She is a cross between a blue tick hound and an indio dog, which leaves a black hound dog with white feet and a white belly.  We’ve named her Vicious.  She’s not vicious now, just cute, although we’re trying to teach her not to bite us now that her teeth are getting stronger.  Basically, having a guard dog is pretty essential here, so we thought we’d start raising one right away.



When we took the visiting group from Virginia to Roatan recently we met a young couple from Boston that were visiting Honduras for a couple of weeks – Patrick and Mary.  We got to talking and invited them to come see us and the school across the street.  They took us up on it, caught a ride up to Rio Viejo, and then asked around until they found out which house was ours.  We had a lot of fun spending the evening together and then the next day we showed them around the school.  Sharon Washburn quickly roped them into talking to her English classes about their careers, which they seemed to enjoy.  Several of the older students are interested in medicine and engineering, which worked out perfectly as Patrick is a doctor and Mary is a chemical engineer.  Thanks for taking us up on the offer to visit!



Due to all the termite damage in our house, we’ve doing a lot of work on our windows this week.  The windows were framed in wood that was either eaten or rotted, leaving us in need of more security.  We met a man that specializes in cement and he’s been working here four days in a row now.  Our house is a mess of cement crumbles and cement dust.  At night we cover the window holes with tarps to keep a few of the bugs out and then we have one of the older male students sleep on our couch for added security.
