Library Times

The library has taken off as a great success in our community!  Thus far we're opening the doors two afternoons a week and we've had anywhere from 10 to 60 kids show up on a given day.   
  
We start out the library time with quiet reading, then we have group story-time, a craft or other activity, and end up the time doing puzzles.  The kids also have the option of putting together book reports for prizes, which is how a lot of the older ones spend their time. 

This is the first time these kids have done things like play with play-dough, cut snowflakes, and put together puzzles.  The puzzles are a huge hit and they're getting faster and faster at putting them together.  Activities like these are such a novelty here that the teenagers get as excited about them as the younger kids.  (Don't miss these kids drawings of Urraco, which are in a photo gallery up on the left called "Our Village.")

Here in Honduras we are getting ready to start the new school year at the beginning of February.  Right now we are planning on how we can expand and improve how the community has access to the library in the upcoming year.  We are hoping to connect with the high school students in our area to offer them resources for studying and doing school projects.  We also want to offer opportunities for learning English and computer usage. 

We want to say a big thanks to everyone who has helped in making our library a success.  This includes anyone who donated towards the project, gave books or puzzles or art supplies, or helped get it up and running.  We feel that this will be an amazingly positive thing for the future of our neighborhood kids, as well as for the kids who will grow up in our Children's Home.  Thanks!
